Nicely engraved maps, coloured in hundreds, showing towns (with their distances from London), villages, churches and chapels, parks and gentlemen’s seats, hundreds (numbered), the Forest, hills, meres, channels, canals, roads (with the miles marked along the important turnpike roads) and rivers. The main roads are carried across the county boundary and their destinations given.

The title, the “ Explanation,” scale, a star compass indicator and a table of “Reference to the Hundreds.”

The border is formed by a thick line between two fine ones with a double inner line marked off into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude. Between the border lines, bottom right, “2° Long. West of Greenwich.” This therefore seems to be the first map of the county claimed to be based on the meridian of Greenwich. It is, however, just as inaccurate as was Burdett’s work based on the London meridian.

It was reprinted in 1804 (when this series of county maps was also collected to form Smith’s New English Atlas), 1808, 1818, 1821, 1827, 1834, 1841, 1848 and 1864.

A NEW ENGLISH ATLAS.

Beautifully engraved maps, coloured in hundreds. It is prepared in the same style and bears a great resemblance to C. Smith’s map of January 1801.  There is a remarkable resemblance between the maps of this series and those in Smith’s New English Atlas. It shows towns, villages, hundreds, the Forest of Delamere (very prominently), parks, hills, meres, canals, rivers, and main and secondary roads.

Top centre, a star surmounted by a fleur-de-lis as compass indicator, the scale in a hatched lozenge; right, an oval plaque, shaded round the bottom edge, containing the title.

The border is formed by a thick line between two fine ones with a double inner line marked off into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude. The meridian for the longitude is not stated, but C. Smith’s inaccurate map, issued earlier in the same year, appears to have been copied. Below the bottom border, the imprint. The backs are plain.

It was reprinted by the firm of Cary in 1807, 1809, 1811, 1818, 1823, 1828 and 1833, and by Cruchley and others in 1855, 1869, 1879, 1883, 1885 and probably a number of other dates. 47 Maps.

Neat little maps, some maps with the west at the top and issued in two states, coloured and uncoloured. They show towns (with their distances from London), hundreds, parks, three canals, rivers and main roads.

The border is formed by two lines with a double inner line marked off into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude. The latter is based on Greenwich with the usual inaccuracy of the period. The outside borderlines, in the centre at the top, are slightly raised to accommodate a hatched panel containing the title. Below the border is a note referring to the coloured edition. The backs are plain. A circular compass indicator; a list of the hundreds and the scale.              -

 Published in 47 parts (25 volumes) between 1802 (?) and 1810 (?) The maps were reprinted about 1810, 1818, 1824 and in 1830.

Possibly one was intended to be more elaborate by having the hills shaded on the maps, but they vary quite indiscriminately in different copies of the work. The maps appear to be copied from those of G. Cole in the British Atlas of 1810, but are rather crudely drawn.

The border is formed by a thick line within which is a hatched space, of 1/8 in., decorated by ornaments resembling spearheads linked together. The border is broken at the top by a long panel containing the title, and at the bottom by a panel with the following notes: “This County contains ..... Acres, Parishes..  City.....Market T.... Inhabitants, & sends....Members to Parl.” The population is taken from the census returns of 1811.

This work was first issued in parts which commenced publication in May 1830.  The maps were reprinted in 1837, 1838, and with the imprint removed, about 1841, 1842, 1848, 1850 and 1852.
