In 1877 Edmund Evans, who was a colour printer and talented engraver, lost the services of Walter Crane as his children's book illustrator and asked Caldecott to do illustrations for two books for Christmas. The result was The House that Jack Built & The History of John Gilpin.

Invented in Vienna, Austria, about 1809, the game of "Hammer und Glocke" or "Schimmel" came to have wide popularity throughout the German speaking regions of Europe, and spreading to Holland, France, and England. Liberty's of London adapted Kate Greenaway's drawings as designs for actual children's clothes. A full generation of mothers in the liberal-minded "artistic" British circles who called themselves "The Souls" and embraced the Arts and Crafts movement dressed their daughters in Kate Greenaway pantaloons and bonnets in the 1880s and '90s. Ernest Nister's company produced many children's books of superior quality in both illustration and printing. Out of these, Nister's productions included a number of innovative movables. In addition to being marketed in Germany, the pictures were also produced especially for an English audience from Nister's London headquarters.

Crane also devoted much time to various artists' guilds and was influential in the Arts and Crafts Movement.

The thaumatrope is a toy that was popular in Victorian times. A disk or card with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to combine into a single image due to persistence of vision.

The wooden paddle was approximately 2 3/4" x 5" with an easy to hold handle. A hole was put in the handle so a leather thong could be tied to it and the child could carry it on his/her belt or around his/her neck.
